Funding

This page summarizes the different sources of funding we have received and how to go about applying for funding.

  • Can apply for up to 2 $2000 awards
    • Notices for CTAHR/CoE REU funding comes out at the beginning of the Fall semester from the Associate Dean
      • Make sure Dr. Kuh forwards you this email
    • Must submit an abstract for each project
      • Abstracts are usually about a page long
      • Other details and formatting included in letter attached to notice
      • Have Dr. Kuh read over abstracts
      • Send revised abstracts back to Dr. Kuh for submission
    • Each abstract also needs a budget
      • Be sure to make a budget that uses ALL $2000
    • Examples of past abstracts can be found in SCEL > General Documents > Papers & Presentations > Funding Proposals
  • Funding can be used for stipends and equipment
    • In the past we have used it for stipends
    • Stipends are not released until after CoE Banquet
  • Must present at the CTAHR/CoE Symposium and CoE Banquet
    • CTAHR/CoE Symposium usually at beginning of April
      • Poster and oral presentations
        • Lab has done poster presentations in the past
      • Also monetary awards are given to high placing poster and oral presentations
    • CoE Banquet usually around mid April
  • Can apply for up to $10000
    • Notices for CoE funding comes out at the beginning of the Fall semester from the Associate Dean
      • Make sure Dr. Kuh forwards you this email
    • Must submit a proposal for each project
      • Work with Dr. Kuh on proposal
      • Formatting of proposal:
        • Summary- summary of background/motivation of project, what our lab does, previous funding received
        • Previous work- include outcomes of previous work too
        • Proposed work- include new projects and new directions we will be heading in on our existing projects
        • Outreach- any events or activities we have helped with for the community (i.e. K-12 STEM activities, Japanese exchange students, etc.)
        • Personnel- list of those working in the lab
        • Budget
        • References
      • Send revised proposal back to Dr. Kuh for submission
  • Funding can be used for stipends and equipment
    • In the past we have used it for equipment
    • Our stipends have been dropped from our awarded amount the past couple of years so best to apply for ONLY equipment with this fund
  • Must present at the CoE banquet
    • Email notification date around March sent by Assistant to the Dean
      • Usually asks for name, class standing, major, whether they are over 21 or not, whether they will stay for banquet (dinner portion)
        • Must also provide name of project and equipment needs
      • Have left invitation open to all students of the lab
        • Have as many leadership team members go
        • Have never had a limit in the past and previously have had up to 7 students attend
        • Will need to think about best way to go about this in the case of many students being a part of the lab
    • Determine posters to present
      • Usually present posters that were also presented at the CTAHR/CoE Symposium
      • Good to have a general weatherbox poster
      • Posters that won awards at the CTAHR/CoE Symposium should also be presented
  • Have received funding for participating in VIP program
    • $700 for equipment and supplies
    • $3500 for bigger ticket item
      • Have used this to purchase Weatherhawk weather station
  • Do not apply for these funds
    • Dr. Kuh will notify you if he receives them
  • Have received funding from the following companies:
    • Johnson Controls
    • Raytheon
  • Do not apply for these
    • These are funds Dr. Kuh has obtained
  • Have received NSF funding
    • Used it for stipends and a little portion for equipment/supplies
  • Do not apply for this
    • These are funds Dr. Kuh has obtained
    • May ask for resumes for students receiving stipends
