This is a thought I had - golang might be a better fit than python for the gateway. The deployment story is nicer, since everything is packaged with the binary. In addition, it's commonly used for network type applications, so the domain fits pretty well.

This needs at least some further research, however. The last time I check the XBee library support was pretty lacking.
